CNN's Jeff Toobin bursts into hysterics at Trump's judicial nominee: 'He shouldn't quit his day job'

Former federal prosecutor and long-time CNN political analyst Jeffrey Toobin said that one of President Donald Trump's nominees for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench knows less than a law student.

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer played a clip of Trump's nominee for a judgeship on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Matthew Peterson struggling to answer questions asked by Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA).

"I know the answers," a heartily laughing Toobin shouted, raising his hand above his head like a schoolchild eager to please the teacher. "But every second-year law student knows those answers."

"Interesting thing to know about that is Kennedy has a questionnaire from Mr. Peterson in advance, he knew the answers to those questions in advance," Toobin explained. So I mean he was appalled, the reason he asked those questions was to embarrass Peterson and really embarrass the Trump administration for putting up such a grievously unqualified nominee."

"But, I mean, so painful," Toobin acknowledged. "Wow."

"Kennedy has been very vocal, he does not think unqualified judges should get to this stage in part because they can't be voted out or taken out of office," CNN White House correspondent Abby Phillip noted. "They are there for the rest of their natural lives."
