CNN's Toobin burns Bill Barr's performance to the ground: 'A political commercial for the president'

CNN's Jeffrey Toobin on Thursday obliterated Attorney General Bill Barr for his press conference in which he used President Donald Trump's own talking points to describe special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

During his analysis of Barr's performance, Toobin accused the attorney general of acting more like a personal lawyer than the nation's top law enforcement official.

"It was an extraordinary political commercial for the president," Toobin said. "I mean, this was a discussion of the sympathy and the difficulty and the challenge that the president faced, and how, not withstanding all of that, the White House cooperated. However, he left out the fact that the single most important piece of evidence that the Mueller investigation could have gotten they didn't get, which was an interview with the president of the United States."

Legal analyst Carrie Cordero said that Barr also did massive damage to the reputation of the Department of Justice by acting more as a Trump political surrogate than the attorney general.

"The attorney general had an opportunity this morning to rise above the politics and to adhere to... just sticking to what the process was, that he was supposed to talk about, and which he said he was actually talking about," she said. "And he blew it."
