Colbert begins the 'Countdown to Loving Mitt'

It has been said that when it comes to candidates, Republicans "fall in line" while Democrats "fall in love," meaning that, ostensibly, conservatives accept the realities of their candidates and their limitations and support them anyway, whereas Democrats expect their candidates to fulfill their deepest-help moral and political dreams and desires and walk on water while they're at it.

The ongoing race for the GOP presidential nomination has been an object lesson in expectation adjustment for some Republicans. Months into the primary race, it appears to be coming down to the inevitable selection of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for the nomination.

On Wednesday night's The Colbert Report, host Stephen Colbert examined what he calls Republicans' "Mittbivalence." He then played clips that suggest that this time around, the GOP is going to stay true to the adage at the beginning of this post. Pundit after pundit seems to be surrendering to the "inevitability" of a Romney nomination, prompting Colbert to post the "Countdown to Loving Mitt" clock, a doomsday-style clock that is counting down the days, hours, minutes, and seconds to Super Tuesday, March 6, when it is expected that Governor Romney will finally assume the mantle of the Republicans' 2012 presidential candidate.
