Colorado GOP congressman hopes to survive tough re-election fight by attacking Trump in new ad

Presidential polling in Colorado is so bad for Republican Party nominee Donald Trump that his opponent Hillary Clinton is relaxing her ad buy in the state. At the same time, voter registration among Latinos in the state has spiked and polling shows it's as a result of Trump's views on immigration.

Perhaps, that is why Republican Rep. Mike Coffman is out with a campaign ad in both English and Spanish denouncing his party's choice for president. According to CNN, he is the first House member to do so, while Sen. Mark Kirk previously was the first senator to run an anti-Trump ad after un-endorsing him.

“People ask me, ‘What do you think about Trump?’” Coffman says in the commercial. “Honestly, I don’t care for him much.”

“I’m a Marine – for me, country comes first," Coffman continues, touting his service in the first Iraq War. "My duty is always to you. So if Donald Trump is the president, I’ll stand up to him. Plain and simple.”

Coffman's district represents the outskirts of Denver and the suburban areas and was named very early on as one of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's electoral focuses for their "Red to Blue" program. Politico ran a memo Tuesday from Liesl Hickey, the former head of the GOP counterpart, the RNCC, cautioned Republican candidates against standing too close to Trump.

"Your race will be won on the margins and in the middle," she wrote. "There is plenty of evidence to suggest that moderate GOPers, women, minorities and other key groups that you need in order to win in November will think differently about you if you are a Trump endorser/supporter/team player."

Hickey also produced the Coffman commercial.

It isn't all anti-Trump, however. Coffman also claims he'll keep an eye on Clinton if the Colorado voters reelect him. “I certainly don’t trust Hillary,” Coffman says. “If Hillary wins, I’ll hold her accountable – every step of the way.”
