Congress can completely destroy all of Trump’s deregulation in one action — but they better hurry
A little-known legislative power would enable Democrats to completely nullify former President Donald Trump's deregulation in one fell swoop, but if they want to do it they'll have to work fast.
While president, Trump and his team worked to get rid of regulations on chemicals in the environment, safety standards, housing guidelines, transparency rules, the Endangered Species Act, energy conservation and more (see Brookings). Using the Congressional Review Act, the House and Senate can repeal some of those rules.
Public Citizen explained that the law allows a majority vote in both chambers, with little debate, no possibility of a filibuster and the president's signature, to strike down any rules from the last White House. The challenge is that it has to be introduced by April 4, 2021.
"The Action Period: Special fast-track legislative procedures that enable a Senate majority to approve a CRA resolution on a Trump rule issued during the lookback period expire sometime between May 10 – May 21, 2021 (estimated)," the organization explained.
