Conservative George Will unloads on the GOP: It's now the party of 'groveling as governing'

Conservative columnist George Will on Thursday unleashed a brutal broadside against Vice President Mike Pence and the Republican Party as a whole, which he said had been reduced to little more than a personality cult surrounding President Donald Trump.

In his latest column in the Washington Post, Will takes Pence and other Republicans to task for their blatant brown-nosing of Trump in order to win favor by assuaging his massive ego.

"The oleaginous Mike Pence, with his talent for toadyism and appetite for obsequiousness, could... become America's most repulsive public figure," Will writes. "Because his is the authentic voice of today’s lickspittle Republican Party, he clarifies this year’s elections: Vote Republican to ratify groveling as governing."

Will then goes on to document Pence's shameless efforts to suck up to the president, and he notes that at one cabinet meeting late last year, "Pence praised Trump once every 12 seconds for three minutes."

In the end, Will finds that even Trump, as loathsome as he finds him, does not deserve his scorn nearly as much as do Pence and the Republican Party.

"Trump is what he is, a floundering, inarticulate jumble of gnawing insecurities and not-at-all compensating vanities, which is pathetic," Will writes. "Pence is what he has chosen to be, which is horrifying."
