Conservative radio host calls on fans to soil themselves in public to protest trans rights

Talk-radio host and author of racist tomes Laura Ingraham told listeners on Wednesday that they will have to wear diapers and soil themselves in public if they don't want to share restrooms with trans men and women.

"Everyone's bathroom is just their own clothes, OK? So this is what we're going to go to," Ingraham said, according to Media Matters.

"I think a lot of people are going to be walking around with just Depends on from now on. They're just not going to use the bathroom," said during her daily broadcast.

She continued, "Adult diapers, diapers for everybody. No one's going to be going to the bathroom. You have little kids, there's going to be no bathrooms. We're just going to all wear Depends. Everyone will just be happy. Then you'll be in your own bathroom. Everyone's bathroom is just their own clothes, OK? So this is what we're going to go to."

Ingraham has been vocal in her opposition to equal rights for trans people, saying that she will never let her daughter use equal-access restrooms. Furthermore, the right-wing pundit has insisted that for parents to allow their children to express their own gender identity rather than forcing them to conform to societal gender roles is a form of "child abuse."

Medical and child mental health experts have characterized Ingraham's statements as "ignorant" and "dangerous."

"If we do nothing for these children, just let them be children, as Ingraham suggests, we are actually doing something, and that something is not good: we put them at risk for anxiety, depression, poor school performance, and later--drug abuse, self-harm, sexual acting out, suicidal thoughts, attempts, or completions," said Diane Ehrensaft, a clinical psychologist and head of the University of California-San Francisco's Child and Adolescent Gender Center.

"Ingraham repeats what so many in my own field, mental health, have done to significantly harm gender-nonconforming youth: dismiss what they are trying to tell us, blame the parents who are trying to support them, and deny them adequate care in one fell swoop," Ehrensaft said.

The psychologist added that adults who deny trans youth proper respect and care are the true child abusers.

"We might even consider the denial of the service a form of child abuse," she said, "there's a life jacket right there, we're watching, and we're letting the child drown."
