CNN's Harry Enten presented new data showing that Americans aren't buying President Donald Trump's assurances about the economy.
The president insists on social media there's "almost no inflation" and that "prices are way down," and he's even floated sending out tariff rebate checks, but Enten told "CNN News Central" that polling shows the public isn't feeling great about their personal spending power.
"What President Trump is trying tosell, the American folks aren'tbuying, and we can see it prettysimply here," Enten said. "Take a look here:This is consumer sentiment – thecurrent conditions, consumersentiment could be the currentconditions or it can be futureexpectations. We're looking atcurrent conditions, and get this:According to the University of Michigan, we are dealing withthe worst ever, the worst-everview of current conditionsdating all the way back since1951. This is record-breaking inthe way you don't want to bebreaking records, and get this: It is down 30 percent. Consumersentiment of current conditionsdown 30 percent from January when Donald Trump took office. Nobueno."
Even worse for the president, Enten said, is that Americans are blaming him for the problem.
"It would be one thingthat President Trump couldignore it if folks weren'tblaming him for it, but take alook here," Enten said. "Trump blamed, Trump'spolicies have worsened economicconditions in America. Look atthis: We're dealing with asupermajority here, we'retalking about more than three in five Americans, 61 percent, who say that Trump's policies have worsenedeconomic conditions in America. How about worsened your ownfinances? Again, we're dealingwith a majority here, 51 percent of Americans say that Trump'spolicies have worsened your ownfinances."
"This is double troublefor the president of the United States," Enten added. "When you're dealing withconsumer sentiment of currentconditions being record-breakingin the wrong ways, being record-breaking for the worst eversince 1951, and you're dealingwith a supermajority who saythat your policies have worsenedeconomic conditions in America, and you're dealing with amajority who say your policieshave worsened. The folks ownfinances, that is, ay caramba."
Enten examined the results for political independents, and he said their views on the economy signaled danger for congressional Republicans.
"Among pureindependents, we're talkingabout four in five, four infive, 79 percent," Enten said. "I'm laughing becauseyou rarely ever see a numberthis high, 79 percent of pureindependents disapprove of Trumpon the economy. How about this? This is no outlier, thisis no outlier because look at Marquette University, their lawschool, 76 percent of pure independentsdisapprove of Trump on theeconomy. When you put it alltogether with the approvalratings, it averages out to anet approval rating on theeconomy."
"Among independents, get this, minus-58 points – oy vey, as mymother used to say," Enten added. "This is thetype of thing that is politicalnightmare fuel, and it is nowonder that a little bit lessthan a week ago, the Republicanswent down to defeat in Virginia,New Jersey. If these numbershold a year from now, the Republicans can wave adiosamigos goodbye to their Housemajority, and they may very wellbe bidding adios amigos, goodbyeto their Senate majority, aswell."
