Cornell fraternity shut down after black student called 'n*gger' and repeatedly punched

A fraternity at Cornell University has been shut down after one of its members allegedly beat a black student in a racially motivated attack.

The Ithaca Journal reports that "the Psi Upsilon alumni Board of Governors announced the closure of the Chi Chapter at Cornell indefinitely" in the wake of the attack, which occurred last Friday.

According to the Cornell Sun, police arrested 19-year-old John Greenwood on a third-degree assault charge after he and some of his friends attacked a black student and yelled racial epithets at him.

The incident began when the black student walked back to his residence, where he said he encountered Greenwood and some of his friends standing outside at around 1 a.m. on Friday morning. After he asked them to leave the area, he says they called him a "n*gger" and then punched him in the face repeatedly.

The student was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for a possible concussion and a broken nose, although tests for both conditions came back negative.

Police are still investigating the incident and may formally charge Greenwood with a hate crime. Greenwood's attorney, meanwhile, tells the Cornell Sun that his client wasn't involved in a physical altercation of any kind.
