Cory Booker demolishes Trump: 'One of the greatest fear-mongers in this nation’s history'

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker has often been named as a potential vice president for Hillary Clinton. In a speech delivered during a Clinton campaign rally in Newark on Wednesday, Booker laid into Trump as one of "the greatest fear-mongers in this nation's history" and said that Trump's views are "an affront and an insult to our higher angels and our best selves." He also said Trump compared very unfavorably to past presidents who inspired us to be better people.

"The issues we hear Donald Trump talking about are just so contrary to who we are as a people," said Booker, as reported by The Hill. "We have Abraham Lincoln saying, 'with malice towards none' and Donald Trump saying 'with hate for all.'"

While it's no sure bet that Clinton will pick Booker as VP, he is showing that he could be quite formidable in the traditional "attack dog" role that vice-presidential nominees from Spiro Agnew to Dick Cheney to Joe Biden have so effectively played on the campaign trail. That said, New Jersey isn't exactly a swing state, so Clinton still might go looking to a Midwestern politician like Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown to balance out her ticket.
