'Coward' Uber driver rapes woman -- then flees the country after posting bond: police

After being raped by an Uber driver, Emily Murray is speaking out about how the court system failed her. Earlier this month, Murray, hopped in an Uber in Boston and quickly found herself in a dangerous situation.

"It happened. I'm not ashamed, I'm not embarrassed. I understand what happened. I know I did nothing wrong," Murray told Boston 25 News. "A loss for words. I was angry I'm still angry. I'm confused."

The rapist, identified as Frederic Amfo, locked the doors and raped Murray in the back seat of his car. "Within minutes I was in a situation I couldn't control and I was assaulted," Murray said.

DNA evidences from the rape kit and his car led to Amfo's arrest. He was sent to Quincy District Court and was placed on bail set at $10,000. He was also ordered to surrender his passport.

On Monday, Emily was informed that Amfo made bail, but failed to surrender his passport. He allegedly fled to his home nation Ghana.

"If I went to Ghana and I committed a crime, I wouldn't expect to be able to hop on a plane and say sorry about that, here's some money. I would expect to answer for it. Accountability. And there has been just zero," said Murray.

In an interview with the Boston Herald, Murray said,

"He is 100 percent ... a coward. He proclaims his innocence to the police and then just leaves?” Murray said. “I feel hurt. ... people get blamed for not coming forward and then get victimized more when they do."

“I don’t feel that I’ll ever have justice for what happened to me. I hope this shines a light and it won’t happen in the future because of me coming forward and me releasing my name and putting a face behind this whole situation,” she said.

In a statement, a trial court spokeswoman said,

“A review of the circumstances indicates that the court allowed the defendant to be released without first surrendering his passport, providing him 24 hours to do so,” she said. “As a result of this review, the court has now implemented procedures to ensure that defendants who are ordered by the court to surrender their passports surrender them when they post bail and prior to their release."
