Lt. Gen. Dan "Razin" Caine, the nominee for the Joint Chiefs chair, insisted that Donald Trump was not talking about him when the now president told a story about the general violating military protocol by donning a red MAGA hat.
Trump made the claim about his choice for top military adviser at last year's CPAC event.
"So I walked down, and this is where I met General 'Razin' Cain," Trump recalled at the time. "I think you're great, sir. I'll kill for you, sir. Then he puts on a Make America Great Again hat. You're not allowed to do that, but they did it."
On Tuesday, Cain was asked about the story at his nomination hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
"The President then said that you followed up these comments by putting on a Make America Great Again hat," Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) noted.
"I think I went back and listened to those tapes, and I think the president was actually talking about somebody else, and I've never worn any political merchandise or said anything to that effect," Caine insisted.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) followed up with a similar question.
"You don't believe he ever said it, but it has been attributed to him," Blumenthal said of Trump.
"Sir, I think maybe he was talking about somebody else when I went and listened to the tapes," Caine argued.
