A White man who was caught on video viciously beating a Black food truck owner in Portland has been identified by police, The Daily Beast reported.
Portland Police are now asking the public's help in finding Daniel Thomas Warren, who attacked Darell Preston on June 15.
Preston says he didn't know Warren, adding that the suspect was yelling racial slurs during the attack. Video footage shows Warren walking away casually after the attack with bloodied fists.
Preston suffered “severe facial injuries” and was driven to the hospital by his wife. According to police, Preston refused medical assistance at the scene and refused to give them any more details about the attack.
“They immediately offered to summon EMS, but he declined,” Portland police said, according to the press release issued Thursday. “When the officer asked for more detail on what happened, the victim declined to say more and locked himself in the cart.”
His attorney, Alicia LeDuc Montgomery, claimed Preston was too scared to talk.
“Any arrest must be based on probable cause and will stand up to scrutiny in any future criminal court proceeding,” Portland police spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Allen told The Daily Beast. “A misstep now could prevent justice from being served later, and we have dedicated and professional detectives working hard to do things right.”
