Republican anti-China senator did favors for Communist Party officials: new book reveals

Former Republican Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) is being called out for doing favors for members of the Chinese Communist Party while he was an official blasting China.

The story was revealed in a new book by Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin, Chaos Under Heaven: Trump, Xi, and the Battle for the Twenty-First Century, and tweeted by Sen. Jon Ossoff's communications strategist Joshua Karp.

"China's tactics didn't always work," the book said. "Senator David Perdue was a former businessman, like [Steve] Daines, with experience in China; like Daines, he sometimes did favors on demand for the Chinese embassy. When the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was planning a hearing to mark the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Chinese ambassador reached out to Perdue, who asked to use the committee room to host a meeting with CCP officials. It was another counterprogramming attempt, but this time the Chinese wanted the recognizable committee room to be the backdrop in the photos. To his credit, the chairman, Senator James Risch, said no way."

The news comes amid reports that China had no role in attempting to overthrow the 2020 election, it was Russia. The revelation comes as a shock because the former director of national intelligence, John Ratcliffe, wrote an extensive op-ed for The Wall Street Journal claiming that China was the biggest threat to the United States. Tuesday, declassified evidence proved that Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized "influence operations aimed at denigrating President Biden's candidacy and the Democratic Party, supporting former President Trump, undermining public confidence in the electoral process, and exacerbating sociopolitical divisions in the U.S." NBC News reported.
