Democratic lawmaker calls out Trump for not cancelling Putin meeting after indictments: 'We are at war with Russia'

Appearing on CNN on Friday afternoon, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) jumped all over President Donald Trump for planning to go forward with his private meeting with Russia President Vladimir Putin in light of indictments being handed down against 12 high ranking Russian officials accused of interfering  in the 2016 presidential election.

Speaking with host Ana Cabrera, the outspoken Democrat was blunt in his assessment of what Friday's indictments, announced by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein mean, stating, "This means we are at war with Russia."

Asked by the host what his first impressions were of the bombshell indictments, Cohen praised special counsel Robert Mueller and his team, saying, "I think Robert Mueller and his team have done an outstanding job. Robert Mueller is to be commended."

He then turned to the heart of the matter.

"It means we are at war with Russia," he exclaimed. "Russia is not a competitor, Russia is a foe. There's no difference between what happened hacking computers and getting information and using it than going into the Watergate and burglarizing the Democratic National Committee's headquarters. The Russians have interfered with our elections, they committed a crime, they are a foe. The president should not look at them as a competitor we need to get closer to."

Asked whether Trump should call off his meeting with Putin, Cohen said the summit was a waste of time.

"Putin has consistently said I was not involved in the hacking of your computers, involvement in your elections, and the president has said 'I believe him when he says that.'" he continued. "Well, the president can't believe Putin, Putin is a notorious liar. Once KGB, always KGB."

"For the president to meet with a liar -- he cannot do it accepting what he has said," Cohen added. "He's as untrustworthy as [North Korean president] Kim Jong-un."
