Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee plan to make public a compilation of "damning" incidents where federal troops used excessive force against civilians, according to a new report.
The group of more than a dozen lawmakers sent some examples in a five-page letter to the White House on Thursday, according to a report by NOTUS. In the letter, the lawmakers called on President Donald Trump to "halt this attack" against American cities and citizens.
"The federal government has effectively invaded an American city, as gunmen atop armored vehicles train their sights on civilians, agents rappel from Black Hawk helicopters onto an apartment complex rooftop, and officers routinely shoot at and deploy chemical agents against civilians,” the letter, written by Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Chuy Garcia (D-IL), read in part.
It also mentions instances where National Guard troops used "violent tactics" recently in Chicago. Some examples include a DHS agent shooting an unarmed protester and then telling her to 'Do something about it, b----,' indiscriminately deploying tear gas, and using zip-ties to arrest innocent children.
“The Administration claims the mantle of law and order, yet its actions in the Chicagoland area demonstrate it is a catalyst for lawlessness and dysfunction,” the letter continues. “Violently abusing residents, kidnapping parents and children and disappearing them into detention facilities without access to basic necessities, and illegally deploying the military against a great American city does nothing to make anyone safer—in fact, it jeopardizes the safety and well-being of every community member.”
