Political analysts and observers denounced a deal that some Democrats are reportedly supporting to end the government shutdown ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
On Sunday, Axios reported that up to 10 Democrats are in favor of passing several short-term funding measures to keep the government open into January 2026, citing anonymous sources. The deal also includes a December vote on extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies that expired when the government shutdown in October, according to Axios.
Some high-profile observers and analysts bashed the deal on social media, arguing that it was akin to Democrats "caving" to Republican demands.
"Come on, don’t let all this be for nothing," Saikat Chakrabarti, a left-wing activist who is running for Congress in Rep. Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) district, posted on Bluesky. "People are going to get crushed by healthcare bills. Trump was literally on TV saying Republicans lost elections on Tuesday because of the shutdown. They are on the back foot. We have a chance to win actual relief for people! Why cave??"
"Dear Democratic Senators: if you vote for this selling out of the ACA it will be the end of your careers," political commentator Keith Olbermann posted on Bluesky. "Depend upon it. You are there to defend this country against Trump and the fascists, not collude with them. If you become Quislings, you will forever REMAIN Quislings."
"Hard to believe that Cuomo supporter [Sen.]Chuck Schumer (D-NY) would sell out Democrats," independent journalist Sam Youngman posted on Bluesky.
"If only Chuck Schumer could be just 5% Mitch McConnell and not 100% Charlie Brown," producer and writer Randi Mayem Singer posted on Bluesky.
"Chuck Schumer cannot agree to any deal that does not include, at a minimum, a one-year extension of the ACA credits," Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, posted on Bluesky. "A pinky promise from [Sen.] John Thune (R-SD) is meaningless."
