Democrats making plans to use obscure 100-year-old law to investigate Trump’s tax returns -- and share them with the public

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump became the first major party nominee in modern history to refuse to release his tax returns.

To this day, President Trump has kept his returns a closely guarded secret, though legal analysts have suggested they have been obtained by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Voters may finally get a chance to examine Trump's tax returns, with Democrats winning the House of Representatives in the November midterm elections, Politico reported Saturday.

Democrats have identified an nearly century-old statue that allows the chair of the Ways and Means Committee to examine anyone's tax returns.

“Probably the approach would be to get all of it, review it and, depending on what that shows, release all or part of it,” said Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX).

“Yeah — that would be consistent with our beliefs," suggested Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA), the committee's top Democrat.

“There’s a precedent for doing this," he explained, noting lawmakers released confidential tax information filed by President Richard Nixon, who underpaid his taxes by almost $500,000.

"Transparency advocates have long complained about Trump bucking a 40-year tradition of presidents producing their returns," Politico explained. "His filings could answer questions about what he earns, how much he pays in taxes and whether he gives to charity."

“There are legitimate oversight questions that can only be answered by having those documents,” argued Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA).
