Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ big challenge coming into the 2024 presidential election is proving to his backers they wouldn’t be better off throwing their money out the window, a Washington Post analyst said on CNN Tuesday.
“If you look at the campaign and the super PAC and the outside groups, it's like $200 million that have been lit on fire to see his poll numbers collapse,” said the Post's Isaac Arnsdorf. “So why are you thinking of throwing good money after that?”
This analysis comes just weeks before the Republican Party’s presidential caucus in Iowa on Jan. 15, where DeSantis will face off against former President Donald Trump, whom polls show to galloping into the lead, and his closest contender, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
The Florida conservative is not coming in strong: His poll numbers have been called an "absolute disaster" and campaign insiders have begun to tell the press "it's over."
DeSantis' inability to build the momentum will make it difficult to prove to campaign backers he has what it takes to challenge the former president, let alone Haley.
And their hesitancy to refund DeSantis could prove fatal to his campaign, Arnsdorf said.
“Campaigns don't end,” said Arnsdorf. “They run out of money.”
DeSantis will need a miracle if he’s going to survive a slate of caucuses and primaries in the following months as the competition becomes more fierce, he said.
“Unless he really pulls off something amazing, that shows that that money bought something, what's the point of spending more to just limp along in state after state?” Arnsdorf said. “That's the challenge that the DeSantis campaign has.”
