Disturbing video shows cop beating a naked mentally ill woman inside a Detroit hospital

A veteran Detroit police officer was caught on video beating a naked woman who appeared to have a mental illness, reported Fox 2 Detroit.

During a Thursday press conference, Chief James Craig said that the unidentified officer has been suspended without pay and that a criminal investigation into his case is ongoing.

The officer was responding to a call when he found the woman having a mental illness breakdown. The officer placed her in the police car and drove her to the hospital.

The officer also provided her with "draping" to wear. While in the police car the woman was calm. However, once at the hospital the woman continued to have a mental illness crisis.

She began spitting on hospital staff members and bit two security guards. At that point, the officer began to punch the lady multiple times in her face.

According to Craig the woman was treated for minor injuries and was in a stable condition. He also called the video "very disturbing."

Other officers at the scene reported the use of force and an investigation was opened.

The Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality condemned the excessive use of force in a statement.

"When we looked at the video, we saw an officer with corporal stripes who had total disdain for a citizen who was obviously ill," the statement read.

"He has forfeited the privilege of wearing a badge as an officer, with his extreme and brutal response to a person whose mental faculties were obviously compromised. He is a danger to our citizenry," the statement read.
