'Unthinkable' deal offered to Trump DOJ stuns legal expert

Andrew Weissmann, a former prosecutor at the Department of Justice, was shocked to discover lawyers for Indian billionaire Gautam Adani offered the Department of Justice a $10 billion U.S. investment in exchange for dismissing criminal fraud charges.

Weissmann led the Department of Justice, or DOJ's, fraud section for two decades.

During an episode of "Illegal News" by The Bulwark, Weissmann described the written offer as "unthinkable" and claimed the case "stinks to high heaven."

Adani was indicted in 2024 on investor fraud and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act charges.

Judge Nicholas Garaufis noted defense lawyers proposed resolving the case through Adani's $10 billion investment pledge, which Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella rejected.

Weissmann argued the timing was suspicious.

Adani had praised President Donald Trump after his election victory, then pledged $10 billion in "Trump's America," with his lawyers later framing the criminal case as an obstacle to this investment.

Career prosecutors opposed the dismissal, with two fraud-section attorneys withdrawing from the case. The defense team included a Trump personal lawyer, Robert Giuffra Jr.

"The corruption is staggering," Weissmann said.
