Mary Trump thinks ex-president will pretend to run again because it's the best money maker he's ever had
Former President Donald Trump announced at the CPAC conference that he "may" run again in 2024, but his niece, Dr. Mary Trump, predicted that he won't, but will likely pretend.
Speaking to Mehdi Hasan for his new MSNBC show, Dr. Trump explained that his political ventures have been extremely lucrative for the former president.
"It's not that I don't think he will," Dr. Trump said about her uncle running in 2024. "I think he will pretend to, for sure. Think about how much money he made in the last few months. He made more since [President Joe] Biden won the election than he has in his entire life. I don't think he will let that go so soon. But you're right, there is no way he will put himself in the position of losing again. But the Republican Party seems determined to continue to keep him relevant."
She went on to say that her hope is that the legal problems facing the former president will extend to his children as they've taken full advantage of their position and of the American public through violations of the Emoluments Clause and the Hatch Act.
As a psychologist, Dr. Trump is uniquely qualified to explain the Trump cult of personality, Hasan said. She noted the golden statue of Trump that was making the rounds at CPAC over the weekend, remarking that clearly, the attendees hadn't read The Old Testament.
"It is pretty, I guess it should not be shocking anymore, but it is pretty demoralizing," continued Dr. Trump. "I think this is a long time coming. This has been the Republican project for decades now to take so much away from people that really all they have left to make themselves feel better than is the color of their skin. We cannot underestimate the pull of white supremacy in this party and I'm not talking about the fringes, this is mainstream Republicanism right now."
She explained that she's been thinking about it a lot lately, and read something from behavioral economist Karen Stenner, who wrote, "Liberal democracy has now exceeded many people's capacity to tolerate it."
"And a lot of people need unity they need sameness," Dr. Trump went on. "And the Republican Party has gotten really good at stoking division. In cases like that people want to stick with what they know. They want to stick with what makes them feel better about themselves. And, unfortunately, Donald has always been very good at doing that."
