Donald Trump condemns acts of 'political violence' — but stops short of calling it 'domestic terrorism'

A number of public figures were targeted with packages containing explosives this week, including the Obamas, the Clintons, former Attorney General Eric Holder, CNN, former CIA director John Brennan, and others.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump addressed the attacks, which seemed to target public officials who have been fiercely attacked by the President on Twitter and at his rallies.

Trump condemned that attacks.

"As we speak the packages are being inspected. The full weight of our government is deployed to bring those responsible for these despicable acts," he declared.

"We have to unify. We have to come together," the president added.

"Political violence of any kind has no place in the United States of America," he said to loud applause. "This egregious conduct is abhorrent to everything we hold dear and sacred as Americans."

However, the President stopped short of labeling the attacks an act of domestic terrorism. He then switched to the opioid crisis.

Until that point, the president's only public comment was to retweet Vice President Mike Pence's denouncement of the attacks. "I agree wholeheartedly!" the President added.
