CNN's Kate Bolduan was startled by the latest polling on President Donald Trump and the economy.
A new survey conducted for CNN by SSRS finds that 77 percent of Americans, including a majority of Republicans, say the 79-year-old president's policies are to blame for the increased cost of living, and his economic approval rating has hit a career-low 30 percent.
"The numbersrevealing a deep anxiety aboutaffordability, that word, andgrowing warning signs for President Trump, 73 percent describingeconomic conditions right nowtoday as poor in the country," Bolduan said. "That's not a good outlook onwhat was once considered, ofcourse, President Trump'sstrongest issue. His approvalrating on the economy has fallento a new career low. Americansare worried full stop, worriedabout paying their bills, especially surprise ones. About two-thirds sayin this new poll that they couldnot comfortably afford a $1,000emergency expense."
"On this mostcentral issue of just being ableto pay for everyday life," she added, "cracksare starting to show among thepresident's base."
CNN's David Chalian took a deeper dive into the survey results."
"We know itis the thing coursing throughthe American electorate, more sothan any other issue," Chalian said. "This istop of mind for folks, as younoted in that bleak outlook, Americans have, that'slike five years running now. A pessimistic view of the economy. We're really still dealing withsort of a post-Covid economy, and even while some structuralthings of the economy arestrong, people are not feelingit in terms of what they'repaying and in terms of theirfeeling secure in their personaleconomy. You noted that a topline approval number for Trump's handling of theeconomy, 30 percent approve. That is arecord low across his entiretime in public life, as yousuggested, this used to be oneof his strong suits."
"Obviously, gas priceshave been driving so much ofthat feeling of economicinsecurity since the start ofthe Ian war, especially, butlook at this number," he added. "This is hisapproval rating, Trump'sapproval rating on gas prices. He's fallen below that 50 percent markwith his own party. I don'trecall the last time, maybe youdo, where I saw a majority of Republicans disapproving of Donald Trump on an issue. Theydo so on gas prices and oninflation. It's not muchbetter, 60 percent of Republicansapprove of how Donald Trump ishandling inflation, 40 percent of Republicans disapprove of thepresident's handling of this issue. The issue, by the way, that you recall, was the thinghe ran on in 2024."
