A Newsmax pundit argued that members of President Donald Trump's cabinet were feigning support of billionaire Elon Musk when the group applauded him at their first official White House meeting on Wednesday.
During the cabinet meeting, Trump asked the agency heads if they had any complaints about Musk or his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, the group applauded Musk instead of speaking up.
"So what this was akin to was two years ago, I once dated this girl for six months, which was six months too long," Democratic strategist Lee Neves told Newsmax after the meeting. "But I brought her around to meet my friends, and they were like, oh, she's great. We love her. Absolutely. A hundred percent."
"As soon as we broke up, my friends all came back and said, oh, my God, thank God you got rid of her," he continued. "This is what that cabinet meeting was."
"Donald Trump brought Elon Musk playing the part of the girlfriend nobody liked and said, don't you all like my girlfriend? And everyone's like, oh, yeah, she's great."
Neves noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was the only cabinet member not to applaud.
"I mean, I think you have a lot of cabinet people, a lot of cabinet secretaries who are kind of chafing under the fact of it's my department," he observed. "The political repercussions are going to be felt not by Elon Musk."

"They're going to be felt by members of Congress, who's already feeling them in their town halls, members of Congress and members of the U.S. Senate who are up for re-election in 2026," he added. "And this very clearly was Trump bringing him along and saying, look, don't you guys all like him? Please reaffirm my choice of having him as my right-hand man."
