Donald Trump's lawyers demand judge ends gag order as rivals launch attacks: report

Attorneys for former President Donald Trump said that the limited gag order in his falsifying business records case must end as the former president prepares for presidential debates with President Joe Biden and nears the height of his campaign for office, according to a motion filed Monday and obtained by The Washington Post on Wednesday.

Trump's lawyers said he has been the subject of attacks from his rivals who are free to talk knowing he can't respond, according to The Post.

“President Trump’s opponents and adversaries are using the Gag Order as a political sword to attack President Trump with reference to this case, on the understanding that his ability to mount a detailed response is severely restricted by the Gag Order,” lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove said in the motion, according to The Post.

Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over Trump's case in New York City, ordered an often-vocal Trump to remain silent about people in the case.

Merchan's gag order remained in effect even after jurors convicted Trump on all 34 counts on May 30, as the former president ran afoul of the order 10 times during his trial.
