'This guy is a cancer': MSNBC's Morning Joe wonders how long GOP will let Trump keep killing them with 'crazy talk'
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough roasted former president Donald Trump for threatening to tank the Republicans' chances at winning another congressional majority.
The twice-impeached one-term president warned that his supporters would stay home unless GOP elected officials found a way to overturn his election loss from nearly a year ago, and the "Morning Joe" host wondered whether that was an indication that Trump didn't plan to run for re-election in 2024.
"A lot of people are looking at those comments, those bizarre comments, [and] took it as a tell that the guy wasn't going to run in 2024. They don't go around saying, 'Hey, look back at 2020 and figure all of that out and create a conspiracy theory that helps me justify my loss there or republicans are not going to win in '22 or '24. It's crazy talk."
Co-host Willie Geist agreed, saying that Trump rarely had a strategy beyond assuaging his own ego and drawing some attention to himself.
"The votes have been counted three times in the state of Georgia, Joe Biden won every time," Geist said. "The statement he put out [Wednesday] was a temper tantrum in which he threatened again to withhold his voters for the 2022 midterm election and the 2024 presidential election unless something is done, whatever that means, about the 2020 election. As you said correctly, he did the same thing in Georgia and cost most Republicans, what many of them say publicly and all of them privately, cost the Republicans the United States Senate by his actions down in Georgia that threw those two seats to Democrats."
Trump told rallygoers that he would prefer Democratic activist Stacey Abrams as Georgia governor instead of Republican Brian Kemp, who narrowly beat her in 2018 in contested election, because Kemp refused to overturn his state's vote in favor of Biden, and Scarborough wondered how long Republicans would tolerate his behavior.
"I've always said the Republicans were day trading and this guy was going to do more to destroy the party in the long-term than anybody else ever could on the Democratic side. if you are a Georgia Republican and you have seen Donald Trump elect Ralph Warnock and Jon Ossoff, and now you have Stacey Abrams [who] is going to be running against Brian Kemp, who is a popular Republican governor, but Donald Trump is telling his base don't vote for Kemp, vote for Stacey Abrams. If you are a Georgia Republican, you've got to be thinking, 'This guy is a cancer on our state GOP party.'"
