'Sir, you need to shut up': GOP pollster says Trump running out of time to turn it around

Kamala Harris continues to gain momentum in her sprint to the White House, and one veteran Republican pollster says Donald Trump is running out of time to turn things around.

The former president made two public appearances Thursday at his golf resort in New Jersey, where he offended military veterans with remarks about the Medal of Honor and asserted that he was "entitled" to insult vice president Kamala Harris, and GOP pollster Frank Luntz said the Trump campaign must stop him from turning off more voters with that sort of talk.

"They expect it, but it doesn't mean that they appreciate it and they're going to vote for it," Luntz told CNN. "They've known Donald Trump since 2015, they've not known Vice President Harris. She can be defined, which is what Trump is trying to do. The problem is, where's the campaign's focus on substance and where she's changed her point of view? Trump is focused on insults. If I were advising him, which I am not, I would look him straight in the eye and say, 'Sir, you need to shut up, you need to stop behaving like a petulant child and start focusing on what the American people want in a way that they want to hear it.'"

The vice president is leading Trump by nearly three points heading into the Democratic National Convention next week, and Luntz said she may push even further ahead – especially if he continues lashing out at his enemies in a way that focus group participants make clear they do not like.

"Look, if I yell and scream at you every time you had me on, you'll stop having me on and you'll stop listening," Luntz said. "Trump doesn't understand that, [and] people have to tell him the truth because, at this point, she's gotten her convention bounce before the convention, and I think Harris could have a five- or six-point lead coming out of that convention if Donald Trump continues to behave the way that he has."
