CNN's Kate Bolduan laughed at a panelist's vivid description of a "panic-stricken" President Donald Trump consumed with guilt over the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
The president prompted a rare response Tuesday from his predecessor Barack Obama after accusing him of "treasonous conspiracy" based on long-settled claims about the origins of the "Russiagate" probe, and Democratic strategist Paul Begala told "CNN News Central" that Trump was clearly trying to change the subject.
"It's a pathetic attempt at distraction," Begala said. "Donald Trump took over after Barack Obama. If he walked in the door and thought Barack Obama had committed treason, he had four years to investigate, prosecute. By the way, this was investigated by the Republican-controlled, at the time, Senate Intelligence Committee. They reported this, I'm quoting their report: 'Putin and the Russian government demonstrated a preference for candidate Trump. Putin approved and directed interference in the 2016 election.' That's the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee, the number two Republican on the committee at the time, Marco Rubio."
Bolduan interjected to say that Begala was perhaps treating Trump's accusations too seriously by devoting so much time to debunking them, and he agreed, but then offered a somewhat gothic imagining of his post-presidency.
"Here's the thing," Begala said. "When you go to Austin, the greatest university in the world, [University of Texas], Austin, over the main building, the main door, the main building, in the tower, it's etched in stone these words: 'Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.' That's from John chapter eight, verse 32.
"It seems to me Mr. Trump is going to etch over his presidential library, 'One day ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall scare the poop out of you.'"
"This guy, he is panic-stricken about this Epstein stuff," Begala added, as Bolduan stifled a laugh. "He can't handle the truth."
Bolduan gave in and laughed out loud, before she turned to Republican strategist Melik Abdul for comment.
"I can't handle you, that is definitely confirmed," Bolduan said, "and the fact that Melik kept a straight face is truly impressive, truly impressive."
