Donald Trump says he'll run independently if GOP doesn't treat him 'fairly'

In spite of a pledge he made in September to not run an independent campaign for president, business tycoon and reality TV star Donald Trump said on Sunday that he will wait and "see what happens" between himself and the Republican Party.

Trump was speaking to ABC News about a recent report that GOP insiders are mounting an all-out "guerrilla campaign" to unseat him as the current front-runner in the Republican race for the 2016 nomination.

"People are sick and tired of stupid people leading them," Trump told This Week host George Stephanopoulos.

“I’m going to have to see what happens. I will see what happens. I have to be treated fairly,” Trump said. “When I did this, I said I have to be treated fairly. If I’m treated fairly, I’m fine. All I want to do is [have] a level playing field."

On Sunday, Reuters reported that a coalition of powerful Republican donors has come together to form the New Day for America super PAC, which supports Ohio Gov. John Kasich for the nomination, but which is now receiving donor money from supporters of other candidates.

New Day for America spokesman Matt David said that supporters of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL) have signed on to the PAC in an effort to head off Trump's lead in the polls.

The group is spending $2.5 million in ads in the primary state of New Hampshire in a “guerrilla campaign” to “defeat and destroy” Trump, who has dominated the Republican race in spite of a number of controversial and inflammatory remarks.

On Sunday, he tweeted an image featuring racist and misleading statistics about "black-on-black crime," which social media users angrily slapped down, accusing him of spreading anti-black propaganda.
