'Don’t bullsh*t us': Laid-off Carrier workers sound off on Trump's failure to save their jobs

President Donald Trump in 2016 struck a deal with the Carrier Corporation that was supposed to save American manufacturing jobs at the company and prevent it from moving them overseas.

Since then, however, Carrier has laid off hundreds of employees -- and many of them are furious because they believe Trump used them as a publicity stunt.

The New Yorker's Charles Bethea went to Indiana to catch up with laid off Carrier employees and found that they feel betrayed and forgotten by the man whom they once thought would be their savior.

Ex-Carrier employee Renee Elliott said she was particularly annoyed that many of the jobs Trump "saved" turned out to be office jobs, and not the blue-collar manufacturing jobs that help people without college degrees advance to the middle class.

"Just don’t bullsh*t us," she said of Trump's promises. "We never thought the office personnel was going anywhere, anyway. They’re not making units. We are. We’re the ones that made the $9.7 billion that they collected."

Laid off Carrier employee Duane Oreskovic told Bethea that he voted for Trump because he thought the president's business background would help him attract manufacturers back to economically distressed regions. So far, however, he's not seeing much of a difference.

"Financially, I thought he’s a genius," he explained. "I said, 'Well, America's in debt; maybe he can do something and turn the economy around.' Obviously, it’s not looking that way. Mr. Trump didn’t do his research and made himself look silly in front of the nation when these layoffs and early retirements began."
