On Friday, special counsel Robert Mueller issued a cryptic statement saying that BuzzFeed's bombshell report about President Donald Trump directing his former personal attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about the timeline of the Trump Tower Moscow project was "not accurate."
Just after the statement's release, BuzzFeed News editor Ben Smith appeared on MSNBC with host Chris Hayes to talk about the extremely rare statement from Mueller.
"The special counsel issues this very vague statement—we are eager to know what he's talking about," said Smith.
Smith said they stand behind their reporting, which is sourced to two federal law enforcement officials.
Mueller's team refused to provide this information before the story was published, Smith said.
"We went to them 24 hours ago and they declined to comment, and have been silent on us" said Smith. "Obviously the special counsel prefers to control the timeline and for reasonable reasons wants to operate on his own timeline and without revealing a lot of details but he's made these statements here and we'd like to know what he's talking about."
