El Paso man facing eighteen months in jail for taking a 'whiz' on the Alamo

An El Paso man is facing up to eighteen months in jail after pleading guilty to urinating on the Alamo, a national historic landmark in San Antonio.

According to Reuters, Daniel Athens, 23, pleaded guilty in a San Antonio court on Tuesday to  felony charges of Criminal Mischief of a Public Monument or Place of Human Burial. The charges carry a sentence of up to two years in prison.

"The message is, 'don't whiz on the Alamo,'" Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed, said in a statement. She also added that she would oppose any request for probation.

Athens was visiting the historical site in April 2012 when he was spotted  relieving himself on the limestone facade of the 260-year-old building by one of the Alamo Rangers, who patrol the grounds.

Spanish colonists constructed the Alamo in the 1750s as a chapel to bring Christianity to the native peoples of what is now Texas. It is best known as the site of the thirteen-day siege, in 1836, by the Mexican Army upon Texas settlers led by Colonel James Bowie.

The Alamo is Texas' No. 1 tourist attraction drawing more than 2.5 million visitors per year.

As part of a plea agreement  Athens will also have to pay $4,000 to repair any damage he caused.
