Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) on Thursday provoked outrage when he said that he wasn't trying to prevent "colored people" from serving in the United States military with his proposed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.
In breaking down Crane's remarks, CNN's Audie Cornish accused Crane of rank ignorance for attacking the notion that the United States military should strive to be inclusive and racially diverse given the fact that America is a racially and ethnically diverse country.
"He doesn't know actually about military history because then he would know that inclusivity is a major part of its story, because it was at the forefront of integration in terms of integrating the armed services under Truman -- this is very basic stuff," she said. "There's this concept that again, 'wokeness' is new, and it must be fought under any circumstances."
CNN legal analyst Laura Coates, meanwhile, found it appalling that Crane seemingly didn't know that it's not appropriate to refer to Black Americans as "colored people."

"I'm not talking about political correctness for the sake of political correctness," she said. "I'm talking about a term that is divisive, a term that is wrought with horror, a term that is one of those concepts that shows no evolution of thought."
