Billionaire Elon Musk is reportedly threatening to finance primary challenges to Republican senators who oppose former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as President-elect Donald Trump's attorney general.
ABC's Selina Wang reported Thursday that an unnamed Trump advisor confirmed the news to correspondent Jonathan Karl.
"Trump has been working the phones, he's been upping the pressure on Senate Republicans, even calling some of them directly," Wang explained. "This is as J.D. Vance is also making the pitch, he was up on Capitol Hill with Matt Gaetz yesterday meeting with some of those Senate Republicans."
"One Trump advisor telling our John Karl that the message is, quote, if you are on the wrong side of the vote, you're buying yourself a primary. That is all. And there's a guy named Elon Musk who is going to finance it," she continued.
The advisor insisted that Trump "gets to decide his cabinet, no one else."
The threat is a sign of Musk's ability to influence Congress on Trump's behalf.

"Having one super-rich guy exercise massive influence over American politics is a very bad thing," journalist James Surowiecki wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "I know Americans don't really care about the nuts and bolts of democracy, but this is a true corruption of democracy."
