Erdogen claims Trump called to apologize after Turkish bodyguards brutally attacked protestors in DC

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told PBS NewsHour anchor Judy Woodruff that President Donald Trump called to apologize following a brutal attack on American protesters outside the Turkish ambassador's resident in Washington, DC.

Following a May meeting with Trump, Erdoğan's bodyguards were caught on tape .

A video analysis appears to show Erdogan ordered the attack.

"Actually, President Trump called me about a week ago about this issue," Erdoğan said, according to a PBS News translation.

"[Trump] said that he was sorry and he told he was going to follow up on the issue when we come to the United States within the framework of an official visit," President Erdoğan

A dozen Turkish security and police officers have been charged with assault for the attack on protesters.

UPDATE -- 8:39 p.m. EST:

The White House is denying the veracity of the statements made President Erdoğan of Turkey.

Principal Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah cited absence of inclusion in the White House "readout" of the call to deny the apology occurred, as reported by Mike Warren of the conservative Weekly Standard.
