New York City Mayor Eric Adams has unleashed an avalanche of shock, derision and black humor after telling a local TV host that one of the attributes of the city he represents is the chance of witnessing a plane crashing into a building.
In an interview with PIX11 host Dan Mannarino, the mayor was asked to sum up the "totality of the year" in just one word — and he chose to answer with two: "New York."
Not content with that, he elaborated, "This is a place where everyday you wake up you could experience everything from a plane crashing into our Trade Center to a person who is celebrating a new business opening. And that's why it's the greatest city on the globe."
After a clip of the video was shared on X, one commenter was quick to point out, "How does anyone have that thought let alone express it in public as mayor of New York? Also New York is two words."
That was just the start as others chimed in, with X user Bronus Swagner darkly joking, "Riding the subway, shopping at a bodega, watching multiple skyscrapers destroyed in a terrorist attack that kills thousands of people; just NYC things."
Disappointed Mets fan Normcore Van Brocklin wrote, "Yeah, but that's only happened twice. It's literally occurred as often as the Mets winning the World Series."
Knibbo Tjakkomans sarcastically wrote, "New York seems to have fewer and fewer "plane flying into building" type of days. The city's not what it used to be."
"How did the city elect this clown," asked Colonial Hoops.
Adam Feibel contributed, "If I was the mayor of NYC personally I would try not to suggest that every day there’s a chance of another 9/11."

MLR FreeThem All worried, "He's a very unserious person, and we are stuck with him," and Eric Reese wrote, "He is an exceptionally strange man. Not a new observation, but one that always bears repeating."
Lynne Thomas went with terse, "Yikes," while Sam Weber suggested, "That is how chatgpt would respond if you asked it this question."
Fuzbum summed up Adams' response as, "This is the greatest city in the world for two reasons: sometimes planes crash into our buildings, and sometimes businesses open."
"He was literally like 'I’ll just say the worst possible thing a nyc mayor can say," DF agreed.
