Hurricane Dorian is thankfully slated to skate just to the east of Puerto Rico this week, but the updated European model shows it nailing central Florida much in the same way Hurricane Andrew did in 1992.

Dorian is now moving north of the island NOAA said Wednesday afternoon.

Dorian did reach hurricane stage as it went into the U.S. Virgin Islands, which are still trying to recover after the 2017 hurricanes. While it is expected to slow as it crosses the Bahamas.

The European Model for hurricanes has proved to be more accurate with long-term projections than the U.S. tracks in past years. It currently shows Dorian hitting central and south-central Florida before reentering the Gulf of Mexico and turning north to dump heavy rain and wind on the other Gulf States. It then appears to hook east toward Georgia and South Carolina before heading back out to sea.

Hurricane Dorian will be a category three hurricane when it hits Florida, with winds between 110 mph and 129 mph late Sunday. That wind speed doesn't account for more forceful gusts.
