Ex-GOP rep slams his own party: 'We are less safe' because Republicans let Trump accuse Democrats of 'treason'

President Donald Trump suggested Democrats who refused to applaud him during his State of the Union are "treasonous" — and according to a Republican ex-congressman, that's no laughing matter.

"This is a moment that is easy to smile and laugh at," David Jolly, who formerly was a GOP member of Florida's congressional delegation, told MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace. "But it is a grave and serious comment by the president of the United States."

"It reflects a significant level of ignorance, it suggests a flirtation with certain authoritarianism," he continued, "but even worse, we have to look at the silence of the Republican party, who is so quick to dismiss this."

Jolly argued that Americans are "less safe" because the House GOP released their controversial memo that contained classified information to further their claim that the Justice Department and FBI have anti-Trump bias at the top of their ranks.

"We are less safe as a nation because of a political party that refuses to speak back to a president who flirts with comments about treason," he said.
