Ex-governor who resigned amid a criminal investigation for spending state money on his mistress now wants to run for Senate: report

Speculation is rife that former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, the notorious failed Senate candidate who lost to Democrat Doug Jones after allegations he molested teenage girls, wants a rematch.

But Moore is not the only disgraced Alabama politician who is considering the 2020 Senate race to stage a comeback. According to the Washington Examiner, former Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley is also mulling leaping into the GOP Senate primary.

Bentley is best known for resigning amid a criminal investigation into his use of state resources to cover up an extramarital affair with his adviser, Rebekah Mason, a scandal for which he was nicknamed the "Luv Guv."

He also allegedly tried to quash the investigation by giving then-Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange the vacant Senate seat occupied by Jeff Sessions — a blatantly corrupt move that led to GOP primary voters rejecting Strange and nominating Moore in the first place.

Also in the race are right-wing congressman Bradley Byrne, and former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville. Reports also speculated that Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz could take advantage of Alabama's one-day-long residency laws to hop state lines and enter the race, but he has denied any plans to do this.
