Ex-RNC head mocks former House chair Devin Nunes for losing ability to sneak 'state secrets' to Trump 'in the dead of night'

The former head of the Republican National Committee took a back-handed swipe at his own party's Devin Nunes (R-CA) for losing his chairmanship of the powerful House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence following the midterm elections, while describing President Donald Trump's battles to come.

According to Michael Steele, who was appearing on MSNBC's AM Joy, Trump no longer has his own "wall" protecting him from Democrats interested in investigating him.

Speaking with host Joy Reid, Steele said Trump's "reality has changed" with the Democratic House takeover.

He then started with a dig at Nunes -- without naming him -- who reportedly was feeding Trump information about the investigation into his administration.

'"He does not have space and someone who will come in the dead of the night and give him state secrets on what's going on, on the Hill and where the investigations are," Steele said with a knowing smile. " He does not have the wall of protection that the Republican Party had given him for the past two years."

"So now he has no wall?" host Reid asked. "And no wall on the border?"

"And a partial one at the Senate," Steele admitted, noting some Republican senators who have recently parted ways with Trump on his government shutdown because he wants money for his wall.
