Ex-White House ethics czar sounds off on Trump for profiting from the presidency: 'It's an outrage!'

After a federal judge ruled a case accusing President Donald Trump of violating the emoluments clause--a constitutional clause prohibiting presidents from profiting from the office--can move forward, Barack Obama’s White House ethics czar lauded the decision.

"Emoluments is just an 18 century word for swag," former Obama aide Norm Eisen told CNN's Anderson Cooper. "And the president is raking it in just a few blocks from the White House."

Judge Peter Messitte of Greenbelt, Maryland ruled in favor of the case brought by Eisen's current employer, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, that will allow the attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia to "bring it on."

The constitutional framers established the emoluments clause, he continued, was to prohibit foreign governments and individuals to "bend the judgement" of the American president.

"What's happening over in the Trump Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue is an outrage," Eisen said. "People are openly saying, diplomats and governments are openly saying, 'of course we're gonna stay there to tell the president that we did that, to try to get in good with him.'"

"This is just what the founders and framers feared," he concluded.
