‘We’re failing our children’: Emotional Shep Smith reminds Fox News viewers ‘this doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world’

Fox News’ Shep Smith on Thursday had a visceral reaction to a deadly mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

Explaining that 17 people died when a gunman opened fire Wednesday afternoon, Smith rolled footage of students telling news reporters their friends, teachers and coaches were killed in the attack.

“Wow,” an exasperated Smith said. “Children”

“It’s astounding, isn’t it?” Smith later asked. “We are the richest, most powerful, wealthiest nation on the face of the planet. We have the best researchers, we have the best universities, yet there have been 25 school shootings here since Columbine.”

“This doesn't happen anywhere else in the world,” Smith acknowledged.

“We have all the resources in the world, and we can’t figure out why this happens in our country and it doesn’t happen everywhere else,” he continued, visibly upset. “Forget your political arguments, why can’t we come together as a society and say, ‘We’re gonna study this, we’re gonna research this, we’re gonna bring our best and brightest together, put them all in a room, give them funds and give them whatever they need to figure out why are our children killing each other more in the United States than anywhere else in the world?”

“Give them everything they need!” Smith exclaimed. “We change the course of human events around this world, this nation does. We put a man on the moon 50 years ago! And we can’t figure out why only our children are running around killing each other?”


“It doesn’t happen anywhere else, it happens here,” the Fox News host said. “We’re failing our children.”
