Rachel Dolezal, a former Washington State University instructor who was revealed to be biologically white after taking over the local branch of the NAACP, is facing welfare fraud charges.
Dolezal legally changed her name to Nkechi Diallo in 2016. She maintains that she is "spiritually" black and felt "awkward" in her white skin.
She's now facing charges of 1st Degree Theft by Welfare Fraud, Perjury in the 2nd Degree, and False Verification for Public Assistance, reports KHQ.
She could face up to 15 years in prison on these charges.
On Twitter, Dolezal's charges were promptly mocked by her many detractors, many of whom suggested she might now pretend to be white to get better treatment by the criminal justice system.
