Trump lawyers put on notice by Fani Willis in fiery private email exchange

In a series of private emails between Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and attorneys representing Donald Trump, the Georgia prosecutor assured the former president's legal team that she expects to put their client in prison despite their best efforts.

According to an exclusive report from the Guardian's Hugo Lowell, in one exchange, Willis wrote to Trump's lawyers, "We have a long road ahead. Long after these folks are in jail, we will still be practicing law.”

That exchange reaffirms reporting that Willis has no intention of working out a plea bargain in Trump's racketeering trial related to the 2020 presidential election.

In an interview on MSNBC last weekend, Lowell suggested to host Katie Phang that Willis has evidence "the federal [D.C.] indictment did not have."

In Thursday's report, Lowell reported that Willis was responding to accusations made by the Trump team about her professionalism and their refusal to acknowledge that she is the duly elected districted attorney, tersely writing, "No one placed me here and I have earned this title. I’ve never practiced law by hiding the ball, I’ve enjoyed beating folks by making sure they have the entire file.”

The report adds, "Relations between prosecutors and defense lawyers have been particularly strained in recent weeks, people close to the case have said, mainly since several media outlets published videotaped “proffer” statements that the former Trump lawyers Jenna Ellis, Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro gave as part of plea deals."
