A prominent FBI criminal profiler laid out three possible motives for the Wednesday morning killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO that left New York City – and the country – stunned as police continued searching for the suspect.
Candice DeLong said that while the average American likely wouldn’t recognize Brian Thompson’s name, his position as the head of a health care giant that covers over 100 million Americans could have made him a potential target.
“Well clearly – and this is obvious – someone wanted him dead, without question dead,” DeLong said during an interview on CNN. “If we know the motivation, then that will help weed out certain people and for me, what I’m seeing here is anger, possibly as much as hatred, and revenge as probable motivators.”

DeLong, who hosts the podcast Killer Psyche, added that it would be surprising to her if it turned out Thompson and his killer had any relation.
“He snuck up behind him, he wanted him dead, he accomplished his mission, and then he fades into the early morning hours,” she said. “It just — it's hard to explain, but it doesn't seem that way to me.”
DeLong concluded that given the size of the company he led, which employs hundreds of thousands of people and insures one-third of Americans, according to DeLong, could spell potential for “lots of people that would be very unhappy."
“So, the pool is big,” she said.
