Florida 'hot cop' resigns as Internal Affairs probes his anti-Semitic Facebook posts

A Florida law enforcement officer, whose fame derived from a "hot cop" selfie during Hurricane Irma, has quit his job after the attention resulted in an Internal Affairs board investigation into racist social media posts he made, USA Todayreports.

Gainesville Police Department Officer Michael Hamill was suspended for the social media posts and then resigned the day he was to be interviewed by investigators.

Ben Tobias, the Gainesville PD spokesperson, said evidence would have sustained both allegations.

The Gainsville Sun was sent screen shots of two of the offensive Facebook posts.

“Who knew that reading jewish jokes before I go to bed would not only make me feel better about myself but also help me to sleep better as well. Here is one for everybody, 'What’s the difference between boy scouts and jews?' Anybody know? Well it is because 'Boy scouts come back from their camps'” read one of the posts.

In a second post, Hamill wrote, “so I find it funny that people will talk about how our government needs to do something about our economy and in reality it’s YOU who needs to stop taking advantage of our system and get a life and do something with your life. Gotta love reality when it hits you in the face. Stupid people annoy me. Put them in an oven and deal with them the Hitler way. Haha.”

Hamill's problems resulting from his internet fame may not just be work related. Investigators also used GPS readings, text messages and interviews to learn Hamill allegedly had sex with a woman while on duty.

The affair with Hamill ended when media coverage "hot cop" post revealed that he was married.
