Florida Republican stuns MSNBC's Chris Hayes by calling 'disgusting' Haiti 'all sheetmetal and garbage'

MSNBC's Chris Hayes had a shocking welcome back from his paternity leave on Tuesday when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) chose to characterize the island nation of Haiti in terms nearly as disparaging as President Donald Trump's comments calling it a "sh*thole country."

"I would not pick those terms," Gaetz said, "but I would say the conditions in Haiti are deplorable, they are disgusting. I mean it's everywhere you look in Haiti, it's sheet metal and garbage when I was there."

"I think you should think, maybe, I would suggest, why people would find that kind of characterization of the place where people live and have pride and love of the place they're from as derogatory," Hayes said, appearing taken aback by Gaetz's comments. 

Twitter users, unsurprisingly, seemed to agree with the host's shock.

"@mattgaetz's district is 14 percent African-American, 1.9 percent Asian-American and 3 percent Hispanic," Hayes' colleague Joy Ann Reid tweeted. "They have my deepest sympathies, in that they clearly lack representation in Congress."
