Florida road rage incident turns deadly in horrifying 'stand your ground' killing

A road rage incident in Citrus County, Florida escalated to a fatal shooting last Thursday when two men got into a heated dispute after their vehicles nearly collided.

According to WFTS, 911 tapes captured audio of the whole encounter between 51-year-old Robert Doyle and 44-year-old Candelerio Gonzales, who was shot and killed in front of his wife, daughter and grandson.

Doyle was driving with his wife in his Kia Soul while Gonzales and his family were riding in his lawn care company's truck, which was pulling a trailer.

The two drivers squabbled over a lane, then each car called 911. Doyle called from his car while Cathy Gonzales called from the truck.

“We're driving a full-size truck and a trailer, you can’t just drive like an idiot,” Cathy Gonzalez told the 911 dispatcher. “Somebody needs to smack the crap out of this idiot.”

The 911 operator urged the Gonzales family to let the incident go, but patriarch Candelerio Gonzales insisted on following Doyle in order to get his home address.

Doyle was on his cell phone talking to another dispatcher.

“I have some maniac trying to follow me, trying to run me off the road,” said Doyle.

He became increasingly agitated and informed the dispatcher that he was armed.

“My gun is already out. It’s cocked and locked,” said Doyle. “The gun's coming out, and I'm going to put it to his (beep) head."

When the vehicles came to a stop at Doyle's home, Doyle exited his vehicle and pointed the gun. Candelerio Gonzales left the truck but his daughter and grandson began to scream, "He’s got a gun!”

"Don't shoot!" Cathy Gonzales shouted, but Doyle fired five times.

Then Doyle trained the gun on Cathy Gonzales and the two children, ages 7 and 8, ordering them out of the car.

"Please help me!" screamed Cathy into her phone.

Doyle held them at gunpoint as Candelerio Gonzales lay dying on the pavement.

Police arrived at the scene within minutes and arrested Doyle, who they charged with second-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault for holding the family at gunpoint.
