Former Republican senator trashes Trump as GOP struggles to unify: 'I think he's a sociopath'

A former New Hampshire congressman and Republican said he would not support the GOP's leading candidate, Donald Trump, because he thinks Trump is a "sociopath," The Hill reports.

Former U.S. Sen. Gordon Humphrey, a New Hampshire Republican, made the comment on Friday. Humphrey had been a staunch supporter of Ohio Gov. John Kasich, for whom he was serving as a delegate.

Unequivocally, I am not supporting Donald Trump,” Humphrey told the New Hampshire Union Leader. “I think he’s a sociopath.”

Humphrey's comments were made amid calls by some members of the Republican party to unite behind Trump. They show that doing so is an uphill battle for the party.

“By not supporting Trump, I am supporting our country,” Michael Biundo, a Republican consultant, tweeted.

“I am focused on bringing the party together,” Trump's New Hampshire co-chairman, Steve Stepanek told the paper. “I’m not going to be asking for any Republican’s resignation at this point in time. I’m asking Republicans to unite behind Donald Trump and the entire Republican ticket here in the state of New Hampshire.”

This week, Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, of Nebraska, wrote an open letter he posted on Facebook, in which he slammed both Trump and his potential Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton. "There are dumpster fires in my town more popular than these two 'leaders.'"
